What is the standard doorframe profile?
There is no single standard doorframe profile. We offer a range of profiles to suit different styles and preferences.
Modern and square = Modular profile
Classic and rounded = Deluxe profile
‘Timber look’ = Regal profile
Please refer to the photos on our website or in our catalogue to confirm your preferred profile.
What are the standard door heights and associated brick coursing?
Standard door heights of 2040mm (24 brick courses) and 2340mm (28 brick courses).
Sometimes 2040mm may be referred to as 25 courses due to different counting methods. We recommend confirming with your bricklayer before ordering.
What is the back opening?
Back opening = wall thickness
90mm brick = 95B/O
110mm brick = 114 B/O
70mm stud + 10mm gyprock either side = 95 B/O
90mm stud + 10mm gyprock either side = 114 B/O
Please advise if non-standard wall thickness as a split frame, custom or commercial frame may be required.
What stud opening do I require for Split or Knockdown frames?
Add 40mm to the door height and 40mm to door width (total width not to each side) for standard split and knockdown frames to calculate stud opening size required.
E.g. door size: 820 x 2040 = stud opening size: 860 x 2080
What stud opening do I require for a Concealed Frame?
When calculating your stud opening for a Concealed Frame, the hinge type you choose will affect the required opening size.
Hirline Hinges
Height: Door height + 33mm
Width: Door width + 25mm
Example: 2040 x 820 door size = 2073 x 845 stud opening
Concealed Hinges
Height: Door height + 33mm
Width: Door width + 40mm
Example: 2040 x 820 door size = 2073 x 860 stud opening
How many hinges do I need?
The number of hinges required depends on the door size and door type.
Standard internal hollow core doors:
– 2040 x 620, 720, 820, 870 = 2 hinges
– 2040 x 920 = 3 hinges
– 2340 x (any width)= Minimum 3 hinges
Solid core doors:
– Standard-sized solid core doors (such as garage shopper doors) require a minimum of 3 hinges depending on door size and weight.
Custom door sizes may require additional hinges also e.g. 1020, 1200 etc.
If you’re unsure how many hinges your door requires, our team can help recommend the correct configuration.
Can a residential frame have the same non-standard components as a commercial frame?
Yes. Residential frames can have components such as screw fix backing plates, dynabolt fixings, electric striker, etc. If you would like backing plates please let us know what thickness hinges you are using (2.5mm or 1.6mm).
What are the locations of the striker plates?
– Standard striker plates come standard with every hinged frame and are located at 1000mm FFL (from floor level).
– Deadlock striker plate is an additional striker that upon request is located 1150mm FFL.
– Trilock striker plate takes the place of the standard and deadlock striker, located 1000mm FFL.
Custom striker plate placements and prep for specialised striker plates (electric striker etc.) are available on request.
When do I require a deadlock striker?
Internal and external garage doors require 3 hinges and a deadlock or trilock for extra security.
Some insurance providers also require a deadlock or trilock as part of their home insurance requirements.
When do I need to lift off hinges?
Lift-off hinges are required when the toilet is less than 1200mm from the door hinge position, allowing the door to be removed from the outside in an emergency.
This is a requirement of the National Construction Code (NCC) for sanitary compartments where the required 1200mm clearance cannot be achieved.
(a) open outwards; or
(b) slide;
(c) be readily removable from the outside of the compartment, unless there is a clear space of at least 1200mm between the closet pan within the sanitary compartment and the hinge position.
*No requirement for Lift Off Hinge in these instances.
What size door thickness can I use?
Our standard residential door frames are designed to suit 35-38mm thick doors.
If you require a frame to suit a 40mm or thicker door, we can manufacture a suitable square profile frame through our commercial department.
What are offset brick ties?
Offset brick ties are essentially another form of brick tie that is used in the case of a double leaf wall where the frame straddles the cavity. They are used to secure the frame within the cavity. You may also need a cavity flashing for this application.
How do I know which side the hinges are on?
Stand on the side where the door opens towards you (like a fridge door). The side the hinges are on determines the door handing.
E.g. hinges are on the left, it is a left-hand door
Alternatively, door handing can also be identified by the side of the frame where the hinge knuckles are visible.
Can I use a different type of lock?
Yes. If you would like to use a mortice lock or privacy latch/lock we can make the frame to suit this we just need a sample that we can work with. You will have the sample returned to you once the frame/frames have been made.
What hinges can I use?
– Loose pin hinges – Standard on all frames unless otherwise specified.
– Fixed pin hinges – Commonly used on garage shopper doors for added security.
– Broad butt (180 degree) hinges – allow the door to swing fully around the frame. Modular, Tenbend and Split frames don’t require broad butt hinges as the architrave automatically allows for 180 degree swing.
– Screw fix prep – Prep to the frame allows for customer to use their own hinges.
What meter box do I need?
Non-rebated meter box – double leaf brickwork is 230mm
Rebated meter box – outside brickwork is 110mm and the double leaf is 250mm
When do I use knockdown or split frames?
Knockdown and split frames are designed to suit stud walls. They are installed after the stud wall has been cladded/gyprock installed.
Some experienced builders/customers use split frames on existing brick by first securing timber down either side of the brickwork (using a dynabolt or similar) and then screwing our split frame into the timber. As this is not the intended use of the frame, this will be at the customers own risk.
We also offer dynabolt prep alternatives to our fully welded frames. Please speak to our team if you are planning to use our frames into existing brick in order to discuss best options.
